Wolf Alice, Rock City, 23-03-16

We last saw Wolf Alice at Rock City for Dot To Dot Festival 2014. It would be interesting to see how the 4 piece from London, currently touring in support of their Mercury Prize nominated album My Love Is Cool, have progressed in the last 2 years.

After an impressively confident and well-received performance from support act Swim Deep, Wolf Alice took the stage in front of a rapturous audience at the sold out Rock City.

Launching straight into ‘Your Loves Whore’, the band showed an electric energy that sustained throughout the entire set, with rockier numbers like ‘You’re a Germ’ merging seamlessly into the more melodic hits such as ‘Bros’ and ‘Freazy’, perfectly showcasing the lead singer Ellie Rowsell’s raw and powerful vocals.

As well as their better known hits, they also played some of their earlier work, ‘Storms’ and ’90 Mile Beach’ which got a great reception. They closed the set with the fantastic ‘Moaning Lisa Smile’ before returning for the encore with album opener ‘Turn to Dust’ and hits ‘Blush’ and ‘Giant Peach’.

There was perhaps a disappointing lack of audience interaction throughout their set but the crowd really couldn’t have cared less, feeding off the bands limitless energy and going crazy for every song. In particular, bassist Theo Ellis (clearly modelling himself slightly on a young Paul Simonon from The Clash) jumping off the stage to interact with the crowd.

All in all, Wolf Alice had a winning combination going with a tight musical performance, phenomenal vocals and unstoppable energy. We look forward to hearing what they produce next!
